Freezing on the bluffs January 28, 2008

Joe and I wandered up to Chimney Bluffs today on my suggestion, which turned out to be a mixed bag thanks to terrible weather. Still, I got to put my new Lowepro Vertex 200 backpack to the test, and it passed with flying colors! It was also nice to just hike around a bit, although I’m more than a little frustrated that I forgot my crampons.

The sun spent most of its time hiding behind clouds, but I waited for the right moments and tried to get a few photos worth sharing, even if not worth getting too excited about.

This first one I shot with a bit of shift from the 24mm TS-E and used my 9 stop Hoya x400 for the first time. After some pushing from Joe I really knocked the saturation of the reds and yellows up in this one to help make the sunset a little more dramatic. I don’t love this one, I would have preferred more sky but there just wasn’t any more sky worth capturing.

I like what the 9 stop ND filter does to the water, however I don’t like that it attached itself to my step up ring that was on the lens. It spent the rest of the evening in my bag and I only just got it separated when I got home. It seems to like sticking only to that step-up ring so I may have to replace the step up ring.

It wasn’t all bad though, the filter works great and I think will be a nice tool. My complaints are it’s now covered in smudges I have to clean off from trying to separate it from the step-up ring, and the spring that holds it in place isn’t extremely tight and the thing likes to rattle and make noises if you tap it. Still, although somewhat disconcerting they won’t affect it’s performance on the front of the lens (well the smudges may but I’m taking care of those).

This second one is a merge of three taken using the shifts in the 24 TS-E. Each one was also shot using a 3 stop graduated neutral density filter to help capture more detail in the sky.

A few more from Photo-A-Day January 20, 2008

I thought I’d share a few more from the Photo-A-Day project.  I’ll create a gallery from the second weeks soon enough I hope but here are a few that I liked or friends liked.

It’s still a challenging project.  I can’t even figure out what to shoot today yet.  I tried to shoot something earlier while I was out but gave up & came home because of a migraine.  I’ll have to come up with something else in the next few hours.

2008 photo a day January 8, 2008

Starting with the first of this year I’ve been taking a photo a day and hope to continue doing so for the rest of the year. So far the attempt has been to work mainly on abstract things, which I used to do quite a bit of a few years ago. Since the first week of this has passed I figured I should share the current photos for each day. I’ve put together a gallery for the first week which can be seen here:

Here’s a sample from the gallery:

I realize the photo for January 5th looks like it was taken on the 6th. The time in my camera was about 15 minutes ahead for some reason and I didn’t realize it until then. I fixed it (in the camera) immediately after that.

freezing to death on the University of Rochester campus January 3, 2008

Went out shooting with Joe and we wandered to different parts of the UofR campus this evening. Temperatures were below 20 and my legs were the first thing to get cold. Managed to get this before clouds filled the sky causing me to give up the attempt to take some more photos:

30 second exposure at f/10.0 and ISO 100

The sky was perfect at that time with the nice moving clouds. I wish I hadn’t centered the building quite so much but it was cold and I was starting to want to get out of there so that’s what I got.  I also would have preferred a better composition coming from the left a bit more so the right roof wouldn’t obscure part of the tower.  I’m not sure if I would ever be able to move far enough over to get it out of the way though.  A few minutes later, after working with Joe to figure out why his D3 would intermittently not write to either of his CF cards (one SanDisk and one Transcend), we left to get some dinner.

Earlier today I was playing around with my flash on the off camera shoe cord thing (overpriced cable that connects flash to hot shoe) while taking pictures of my cat, Ghost. Here he is:
