And the winner is…. July 1, 2008

I know nobody expected this camera at all. There weren’t any rumors or leaks of information, glossy magazine spreads or anything else. This is the biggest surprise to hit the photography industry since Boyle and Smith accidentally detected light.
The naming of this camera seems to be unfortunate but wise. Had they called it the D10 they’d run in to Canon’s naming system again. However had they called it the D10, it would have at least made more some sense to me according to Nikons current naming convention (which is already a bit jumbled up and disorganized). D700 seems arbitrary, but at least they can go up or down a few generations before hitting another model number.
For those of us watching this market segment, this is likely to be the first of many and that is why we win. This increased competition will hopefully drive innovation and maybe even keep the price of the 5D’s replacement in line. With Sony readying something that seems to be the A900 and Canon almost guaranteed to unleash at least one full frame body soon, it will start to get interesting quickly. My concerns surround whether Canon will give people what they want, and whether Sony will fix what appears to be a design mess with the A900 whose rear screen seems to stick out too far. Smushed noses are no fun, and the A300 has already demonstrated probaby the best example of this design mistake.
