It's cold, lets go somewhere with no heat! Agway, Flintkote and the subway.

This past weekend college friends Bruce and Kristin came to visit and do some exploring.  The abandoned subway was on their to-do list along with Sykes Datatronics, beyond that they hope to be able to see some other locations as well.  I came up with a few other ideas with Andrew’s help for Saturday since we planned to hit those first two on Friday. [...]

Canon Digital Rebel survives 3000 foot fall

Calin Leucuta (from his thread @ Fred Miranda's forums) In spite of all their talk about terminal velocity and mass of objects in free-fall, this is still one heck of an impressive tale. This rebel lived up to its name, falling a supposed 3000 feet to the ground and surviving the impact against all odds with little more than a crack. Do I believe that it was really 3000 feet? Welllll….. [...]

I want to go back to New Mexico

Back in the winter of 2006 I visited my friend-from-preschool Dan in Pittsburgh, saw the sights and then flew out to New Mexico with him. Dan and I were going to visit his sister, Charlotte, in Santa Fe for about a week. The trip was originally going to be a visit from just Dan but with the help of their parents the plan was hatched for me to join and surprise Charlotte. Mission accomplished! [...]

Workshop #3: street corners

This workshop was quite a bit different. A lot of people didn’t show up for it (tsk tsk!) and it was a bit more loosely structured than previous workshops. Instead of being told to capture something to fit an assignment we were basically just given a street corner and told to go forth. We chose our corners by marking them on the maps so of course I chose a corner that I thought would be interesting. Then we were asked to hand our maps to the person to our right. Ahh! [...]

November leftovers

No, not turkey, stuffing and gallons of gravy. I figured I’d post a few odds and ends that I never did get around to sharing earlier in the month. This is all just fun stuff that I have lumped in to one gallery. To start, I included a few photos from Dan & Amanda’s wedding at The Old Toad which all seem to feature my friend Daron, the wedding officiant. [...]

the NOVA concept DSLR is strange

Design student Erin Fong (I’ll assume no relation to Gary Fong) came up with a rather unusual concept DSLR design. I think it’s great when someone thinks outside the box but there are some things about this design that make me wonder if she’s ever actually used a DSLR! [...]

Hasselblad's H3DII-50 moves multishot up to 50mp

Hasselblad has continued what they started with the H3DII-39 by taking their multishot system and applying it to a higher resolution sensor. Technologies like this have always appealed to me so it’s good to see that companies are able to continue to push them along successfully. Pixel shift multishot systems certainly aren’t ideal for many subjects but work very well for high detail recording of static scenes. [...]

Workshop #2

Our gang of photographers got together again on the 21st for a second workshop to continue to push ourselves and help each other improve. This time the focus was more on compositional elements rather than story telling. I think that most of us felt this one was a bit harder since the assignment was more vague than the first (deliberately). It also made critiquing a bit harder than the first week but I think the idea was good. [...]

Software for the colorblind: HueVue for the iPhone

The flexibility of the iPhone platform is allowing for a broad variety of tools to be developed for it which intend to address issues of interest for colorblind people such as myself. While I still don’t own an iPhone (and don’t intend to get one), this is another tool that can identify colors, simulate color blindness and provide color matching and coordination features. HueVue performs a number of handy functions with an a easy to use interface. [...]

Studio 181 workshops & Rochester at night (galleries)

That’s right, this post is a twofer! This post will be a bit backwards since I figure the workshop at Studio 181 is a more interesting topic than Friday night wanderings around downtown Rochester. Saturday marked the first of a series of workshops during which a number of local professional and amateur photographers will be getting together to hang out and talk shop; but also push our own boundaries and comfort zones by trying new types of photography and giving and receiving critiques. [...]
