I’m not quite dead yet

Thank you to those who have bugged me about not posting here in such a long time. The real world, that is the one that is not the Internet, has been keeping me very busy lately. I haven’t done much shooting and there hasn’t been much news in the photo world that interested me enough to post! Even the photo-a-day project had to get put aside after around 11 months ongoing with the same basic theme. I’m sure I’ll pick the photo-a-day concept up again, however I’m sure I’ll also do it slightly differently.

I do have an enormous backlog of photos to process, so perhaps this weekend I will get some of those done and make a post showing that there is life here. I am also working on putting together a book of my photos for a family member who wants one. It seems my best options for having such a thing produced are Lulu or Blurb, both of which I have never used. In anticipation of this I have installed InDesign and am curious to see if my past history working with Aldus/Adobe PageMaker will provide me with any useful experience in dealing with InDesign. I will definitely comment on my experience with whichever publishing site I use. I’m leaning towards Lulu because it forces me to use InDesign which allows me more control over page layout and design.

Blurb does have a tool you can download for putting together a book which is probably great for many people, but I don’t think it will suit me. Both of these services seem to offer more features, capabilities and decent quality with very reasonable prices. I’ve played around with Shutterfly before and while it’s not terribly expensive, the quality of the printed photos was not very good in my opinion. I had a coupon for Shutterfly at the time though, so I figured I’d give it a shot!

I just realized that I posted nothing for the month of December. Disappointing, I didn’t ever want to leave this site dead for a whole month. It’s a new year though, so here’s to hoping I don’t do that again in 2009. I think it’s time to replace the top banner for the site as well… hopefully I can find another photo that works well in that awkwardly wide aspect ratio.

  • This topic is quite trendy in the net right now. What do you pay attention to while choosing what to write ‘

To be honest this topic came out of my own desire to produce some photo books. Otherwise I do keep an eye on forum discussions and what some of the tech & photo news blogs are talking about.

  • [...] Back on January 10th I had talked about how I was in search of options for printing some photo books for myself, family and others. At that point the only service I had ever used was Shutterfly thanks to a coupon I had received from Amazon after buying a lens. Overall the Shutterfly experience was not overwhelmingly positive. Their software was a web based tool which worked but not very well. I found the site had a tendency to go down while I was trying to work on the book and that laying things out and setting things up was a slow and tedious task as it was not always responsive and didn’t always do what you were asking of it. I needed to move beyond them and find a better solution. [...]
