2009 Rochester Air Show

This year the annual air show came at the end of May instead of the end of July and I must say that was a welcome change! It was much nicer out and the weather was much clearer than last year’s hazy sky. The change in location was a mixed blessing though. Moving it to Charlotte beach did have the advantage of getting us off the hot tarmac at the airport. [...]

Back to downtown Rochester on May 23 (gallery)

A friend from undergrad came to visit for the long holiday weekend and since he had never really seen that much of the downtown while he was here we decided to wander around some with our cameras. The lighting was iffy even though we arrived during the golden hour before the sun sets. With the sky a bit overcast I just couldn’t get the contrast or colors I wanted with a lot of the things I was looking at but still we had a good time and he got to see some new parts of the city. [...]

New site feature: see this website with simulated colorblind vision

After learning about http://colorfilter.wickline.org/ I wanted to incorporate it in to this site. If you click the image at the top of the right sidebar (just above where it says “Login” if you haven’t logged in) you can view this site with the colors filtered to simulate the various kinds of colorblindness. You can click the icon while viewing any page on this site and it will filter that page. [...]

Various tweaks and a new page

I adjusted a few settings pertaining to the new (but not so new now) theme… hopefully there won’t be any other hidden surprises or things that I broke during the transition. I also added a new “Learn Something” page accessible through the page link bar just below the site banner at the top of the site. It seems there may have been some hiccups with the RSS feeds recently, if that’s the case I apologize, it should be behaving now! [...]

Curves 3: Manipulating Curves

To really show the process of using curves I think it will be easiest if I take a couple photos and go through the process with example images and an explanation of each step. The first image I’m going to work with is a color image and I will work through it using Photoshop curves, and the second will be a black & white example although I will show the curves adjustments performed in Capture One instead. [...]

Curves 2: The Curve

If you just came from the previous post, Curves 1: The Histogram, then welcome to the real interesting part. If you haven’t read that and don’t feel you have a good handle on histograms I recommend going back and reading it first. What are curves? The curves tool allows you to manipulate a very fundamental aspect of how an image is reproduced. For those with a background in film or other imaging systems the idea of a tone reproduction curve might sound familiar. [...]

Curves 1: The Histogram

Modern photographers are inundated with numerous tools for adjusting their images. Some can be used to adjust contrast, brightness, saturation or even fancier sounding things like clarity. Unfortunately one of the most powerful tools at the photographer’s disposal is also one of the least understood, and as a result is frequently avoided. [...]

Curves Introduction

As more and more people have been getting in to digital photography and finding more situations where they need or want to enhance the contrast, saturation or other aspects of their images they run in to the fact that Photoshop for example may offer many different ways to accomplish the same task (to varying degrees of success). [...]

Blowing off steam around downtown (gallery)

This afternoon seemed like a good time to just get out and walk around for a bit. The weather was gorgeous and I needed the break from the usual. Dan joined me for what turned out to be a nice hour and a half or so spent walking around downtown Rochester. Too bad I don’t have something to track the course we followed, it was a little bit of every which way but I think we covered a few miles while we were down there. [...]
