In the current economy, is Nikon charging too much for the 70-200 VR II?

Has Nikon lost their mind with the price of the new 70-200 VR II lens’ If it indeed performs well edge-to-edge on a full frame then perhaps that’s a matter of how much you need a lens like this. The previous version has been known for relatively poor corner performance on FX cameras and that was the biggest concern for many as rumors of a replacement began surfacing. [...]

Weekend adventures – forgotten places in Rochester

This weekend promises to be an interesting weekend in many ways. A number of people from around the area (and some Canadians) will be gathering together in Rochester to see various sites & places around Rochester. As always when I go out wandering, exploring or sight seeing, I’ll have some camera gear on me and I hope to come back with some neat shots to share! [...]

Photo galleries from recent Friday studio shoots & some other things

The past two Fridays have worked out to be good days for getting in the studio and doing some shooting. On the 17th I wasn’t exactly in top form because I hardly slept the night before but I still came away with some shots I’m fairly happy with. The 24th went very well and I’m really pleased with a number of the shots that I came away from that shoot with. [...]

What The Duck takes a well aimed shot at Gary Fong

I’ve never hidden my distaste for the overpriced, misused, misunderstood, misadvertised Gary Fong paraphernalia so many photographers are attempting to use these days. I tend to bite my tongue in public about things like the many Gary Fong contraptions but seeing it hit a popular webcomic like WTD warms my heart. I wonder if this will delay the development of a sousaphone shaped flash attachment that I’m sure Gary Fong has been working on. [...]

The exciting conclusion to “Inheriting a bag of mystery camera gear”

Nearly a month ago now (yikes!) I mentioned that I would be receiving some inherited camera gear. It arrived a few weeks ago but I only just got around to shooting it now, partly because I wanted to try a particular photographic technique for shooting the gear. A couple years ago Joe was trying a blackwater technique that produces some really nice reflections and is pretty spiffy for doing product shots. I wanted to do the same but I didn’t have any of the equipment to do it. [...]

Photobooks revisited

I’ve been slowly working on putting together a book and I have been dragging my feet on it in part due to the fact that I’m not sure where to get it printed. I am happy with what Smilebooks offered for the price. I still have their software installed however I’m looking to find something with a higher overall build quality, in particular with a stitched binding rather than just glue. [...]

New image display method

I’ve replaced Lightbox. For a long time I’ve been trying to find something with the ease of use of Lightbox that incorporated automatic image resizing (like Shadowbox). I also needed it to display longer descriptions correctly, something Shadowbox has trouble with but Lightbox is good at. Shadowbox still has some neat features that I wish I could take advantage of like allowing you to drag a huge image around inside of the pop up frame. [...]

Seekey allows the colorblind to see colors again

As with most red-green colorblind people I have trouble with many things. Someone with a more severe deficiency than I may find traffic lights difficult to interpret but even in less critical areas the inability to tell red and green apart reliably can be quite frustrating. If I walked around any office or my house I could easily find many things with indicator lights that are a variety of colors. Most are some combination of red, green and yellow. [...]

Laurie at the abandoned Agway facility (gallery)

Nate talked me in to joining him and Laurie to visit an abandoned Agway facility where he wanted to work on trying to achieve the look of Miru Kim’s work. He wanted some help with lighting and other things and we both needed the distraction so I figured I’d join them and try to help him with what he was looking to achieve. Unfortunately instead of helping Nate get the look he wanted I seemed to wind up shooting a fair bit myself. [...]

July 4th in Rochester (gallery)

Yesterday Collin, Nate, Angelika and myself met up and did some shooting & wandering at the Lamberton Conservatory in Highland Park. Later we met Denitza downtown and walked from Dinosaur down and across the High Falls gorge and back up the other side of the river. The weather was fantastic for the walk and Nate, Collin and myself did some shooting off and on throughout the day. [...]
