One very important aspect of certain types of photography whether you’re colorblind or not is correct color reproduction. There is a lot that can go in to understanding and properly white balancing but the reality is that today there are many simpler approaches to ensuring correct color that eliminate much of the guesswork or the need for a deep technical understanding of the issue! You don’t need to white balance with a piece of white paper, or anything white at all. [...]

Since I’ve been uploading more recent work I thought it was appropriate to post up the figure study work I originally shot from 2003-2005. This all began when a friend of mine from undergrad asked me to shoot her, at the time something I’d never done or really put much thought in to. We wound up shooting several times through 2005 before graduating. These represent both some experimentation and learning as well as execution of some ideas I had at the time. [...]

Sony I thought this was interesting… The question of who would be first to have a sub-$2k full frame camera has been floating around for a bit now and I suspected Sony would have a good shot at getting there first. They likely want to grab a lot more market share from Canon & Nikon in the higher price bracket and I bet this will win them some converts. [...]

Canon Canon caught some heat for the 15 megapixel G10 from a broad range of sources and justifiably so in my opinion. The sensor produced great detail as long as you were at low ISO but was severely limited in what it could do once the ISOs started creeping through the triple digits. [...]

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } I’ve always struggled with this particular image. I want to like it and make it work because the sky was incredible during that sunset and because it was a technically fun photo to take. [...]

I recently dug my 35mm film scanner out of the closet and have been scanning and rescanning old film shots. Sometimes I’m looking for the good ones I missed and other times I just want to try to get a better scan of one of my old favorites. I’ve created a gallery here for them and I will continue to add to it as I scan things and feel they’re worth sharing. I’ve actually decided to upload these at a higher resolution than usual. [...]

After many repeat suggestions of “sell prints you fool” I’ve finally decided to try something. For the time being I’m giving Etsy a shot. I know quite a few people who use and love it so why shouldn’t I? Click on the “Buy Prints” link in the top navigation bar and you can be the lucky owner of this experimental first online print-for-sale. On another note, I can’t wait for color management in Flash to match what Firefox is doing to CSS colors. [...]

Nikon This is something I’ve been expecting for a while and now it’s a reality. Nikon has taken the pico-projector trend to the next level by building one in to the new COOLPIX S1000pj. Normally I don’t care much about Nikon’s P&S cameras because they tend to be lousy but this one deserves some attention for being the first to be able to project your images on the wall. [...]

The screwed up links for several recent galleries on the galleries page have been fixed. [...]

On August 2nd I joined Nate and a number of Rochester & Canadian explorers on a trip out to Lockport, NY to check out the abandoned Flintkote facility. This structure is not far from the center of Lockport and natural encroachment by new tree growth shows that this abandonment is roughly three decades old. Flintkote made a variety of products from asphalt shingles and road materials to various asbestos materials. Ultimately asbestos related claims are what brought Flintkote down. [...]
