I’ve always struggled with this particular image. I want to like it and make it work because the sky was incredible during that sunset and because it was a technically fun photo to take. I used a 3 stop soft-edge ND filter and took three separate shifted exposures with my 24mm TS-E lens which I then stitched together. Tilt-shifts make for some easy stitching, they’re great for making easy panos or in this case for creating a 13+ megapixel file from an 8 megapixel camera. The problem is I’ve never quite been wowed by this one, personally. It seems to get a bigger reaction from other viewers and I recently uploaded this new B&W version which I created the other day. Although the colors in the sky draw me in I have always felt the image was stronger as a B&W. What has been interesting is the mix of responses from other people I have shared these with; some love the B&W and some love the color (and surely some hate both!).
Art certainly is a matter of personal taste and this one really seems to divide people on the color or B&W issue. I actually find myself liking the B&W version of this quite a bit now that I’ve finally processed it to my liking.

I like the black and white one.
