2009 PhotoPlus has come and gone, and the current economic conditions have definitely taken their toll on the show. Some brands didn’t bother to show and there was less free swag than last year. Still, not a bad show and it was nice to check out some of the new toys as always! My last post already got the ball rolling on covering what we did at the show. [...]

Time to get started with the report from this weekend! The big news that seems to have spread like wildfire is the photos my friend Bruce took with the 1D Mark IV to test its image quality at a range of ISOs. Unfortunately nobody here thought to test the D3s so a juicy comparison isn’t in the cards. If I had known he was going to do that while I was at the show I might have tried to sneak a few from the D3s. [...]

After all the packing, charging and formatting I am hopefully all ready for the weekend. I’ll be back Monday evening and will get show impressions, photos and other good stuff up throughout the rest of next week! [...]

After all the rumors the final result is a 16 megapixel, 10fps overhauled 1D camera with extensive video capabilities and ISOs to match Nikon’s latest. The sensor has been redesigned to support the 6 extra megapixels with more transmissive color filters, improved gapless microlenses and changes to the actual circuitry design in the sensor. If this actually adds up to performance to match the D3s at ISO 102400 it will indeed be impressive. [...]

Historically it hasn’t been possible to get in to any new medium format digital systems without spending at least around twice what the top tier full frame cameras like the D3x or 1Ds cost. Leaf’s new Aptus II 5 digital back now makes it possible to jump in to a medium format system for a much more reasonable price. The new back sports a 48x36mm 22 megapixel CCD imager and costs $8000. [...]

I’ve always found a lot of the special edition cameras to be rather amusing. Usually it involves some sort of metal bling like silver, gold or titanium colors. Pentax has gone all pre school with the Kore Ja Nai robo toy themed special edition K-x. Considering that Pentax will be offering the K-x with 20 body and five grip color choices that you can configure with an online creator, I’m sure that it wasn’t a big stretch for Pentax to put together this multicolored camera. [...]

With its new D3s Nikon has raised the ISO bar again, this time to a mind boggling 102400. Having not seen any samples I have no idea how good the images look or how useful they are, but the fact that it even gives you the option is impressive enough. The D3s also adds video features and other refinements to the line. I’ve heard rumors that the Olympics wouldn’t allow still cameras that also recorded video. [...]

Sykes Datatronics was a successful computer manufacturer in the 1980′s but ultimately fell due to mismanagement and competition with companies like IBM who muscled them out of the personal computer business. This resulted in them abandoning their location in Rochester, NY in 1990. Since then the building has been unoccupied and has suffered damage from a number of fires over the years. [...]

Finally! With Joe’s help we got a city walk to happen and I got to get back to the things that really interest me. It’s been a while so I didn’t do as much as I would like but I will be trying to focus more on inanimate objects now to keep people-photos from taking over. [...]

During the first week of October I did some shooting with both Lindsey and Liz on a number of occasions. We did a few shoots in the studio and both of them became obsessed with the fan for the windblown hair look. The last shoot was a bigger affair that the two of them conjured up and worked on with Olivia, a makeup artist they knew. They asked me to shoot it and the rest is history. That shoot was in the abandoned Rochester subway and we worked with natural light only. [...]
