Willard Boyle & George Smith can be considered the fathers of digital imaging. Together they are responsible for the CCD imaging sensor which even today still is the type of sensor at the heart of many imaging devices (although it certainly has evolved over the years). This year each of them was awarded 1/4 of the Nobel Prize in Physics, along with Charles Kao for his work in transmitting light over fiber optics. More about these awards in the press release. [...]
