November leftovers

No, not turkey, stuffing and gallons of gravy. I figured I’d post a few odds and ends that I never did get around to sharing earlier in the month. This is all just fun stuff that I have lumped in to one gallery. To start, I included a few photos from Dan & Amanda’s wedding at The Old Toad which all seem to feature my friend Daron, the wedding officiant. [...]

the NOVA concept DSLR is strange

Design student Erin Fong (I’ll assume no relation to Gary Fong) came up with a rather unusual concept DSLR design. I think it’s great when someone thinks outside the box but there are some things about this design that make me wonder if she’s ever actually used a DSLR! [...]

Hasselblad's H3DII-50 moves multishot up to 50mp

Hasselblad has continued what they started with the H3DII-39 by taking their multishot system and applying it to a higher resolution sensor. Technologies like this have always appealed to me so it’s good to see that companies are able to continue to push them along successfully. Pixel shift multishot systems certainly aren’t ideal for many subjects but work very well for high detail recording of static scenes. [...]

Workshop #2

Our gang of photographers got together again on the 21st for a second workshop to continue to push ourselves and help each other improve. This time the focus was more on compositional elements rather than story telling. I think that most of us felt this one was a bit harder since the assignment was more vague than the first (deliberately). It also made critiquing a bit harder than the first week but I think the idea was good. [...]

Software for the colorblind: HueVue for the iPhone

The flexibility of the iPhone platform is allowing for a broad variety of tools to be developed for it which intend to address issues of interest for colorblind people such as myself. While I still don’t own an iPhone (and don’t intend to get one), this is another tool that can identify colors, simulate color blindness and provide color matching and coordination features. HueVue performs a number of handy functions with an a easy to use interface. [...]

Studio 181 workshops & Rochester at night (galleries)

That’s right, this post is a twofer! This post will be a bit backwards since I figure the workshop at Studio 181 is a more interesting topic than Friday night wanderings around downtown Rochester. Saturday marked the first of a series of workshops during which a number of local professional and amateur photographers will be getting together to hang out and talk shop; but also push our own boundaries and comfort zones by trying new types of photography and giving and receiving critiques. [...]

Surprises: Ricoh GXR edition

Sometimes something happens in the world of photography that I didn’t expect and it takes me by surprise. Some things are to be expected, like RED’s now year old announcements seeming to be vaporware, but some things pop up out of the blue. In the spirit of these moments and with the assumption that someone might read these thoughts and find them interesting, I will attempt to start a new type of post for this site. [...]

Leaked Ricoh GXR proposes interchangeable lens-sensor modules

This might well be one of the stranger interchangeable camera concepts that I’ve seen lately but it’s not without its benefits. Instead of interchangeable lenses the system comes as a body component which accepts a range of lens-sensor modules. This could provide ideal performance for each lens-sensor pair as well as huge zoom reach if paired with a smaller sensor in the module, but it can also be taken other directions. [...]

Finally! Exploring the abandoned American Laundry Machine Company in Rochester

I’ve been wanting to visit this location for months now, but somehow it was always just out of reach due to all kinds of scheduling conflicts. Finally on Saturday (the 7th) Andrew coordinated a trip to visit a few locations: the Subway, ALMC and Jewel. We didn’t make it to Jewel, that was planned for last, and I didn’t shoot any at the subway but the four of us had a good time. [...]

Catching the last of the color at Durand Eastman Park

Unfortunately I managed to miss opportunities to do much shooting when there was more color, although even that is a relative term since trees around here don’t seem to coordinate their color changing. Since neither of us had done much shooting lately we got together at Sips Coffee (neat little place) and then went off to the park. It was a cool day but nice and we saw a number of other people enjoying the park as well, walking the various trails throughout it. [...]
