I’ve been wanting to visit this location for months now, but somehow it was always just out of reach due to all kinds of scheduling conflicts. Finally on Saturday (the 7th) Andrew coordinated a trip to visit a few locations: the Subway, ALMC and Jewel. We didn’t make it to Jewel, that was planned for last, and I didn’t shoot any at the subway but the four of us had a good time. The group consisted of Andrew, Trent, Danielle and myself and it was a bit of a meet & greet and exploring initiation for Danielle.
We entered the subway through the always convenient entrance under Dinosaur BBQ and explored a bit on the east side of the river before crossing under Broad St. bridge and continuing a little ways in to the tunnel. After the subway we made a quick stop at High Falls since Danielle is from Ithaca and isn’t a local and we all figured that was one of those must see touristy things she should do.
Finally we made our way to American Laundry (or ALMC as it is usually known). This site is pretty big, consisting of a number of buildings that aren’t connected internally. Parts of the location belong to other companies and remain active but much of the original building is abandoned, including the large factory building.
Although ALMC went defunct at this location decades ago, some military hardware supposedly remained for a while since ALMC machinery was installed in WWII naval ships. A number of glass blanks can be found throughout the factory area since at one time the location was apparently used for manufacturing of various optical bomb sights and other components. Andrew shared some other information with me, some of it related to how this location was closed down because the leaseholder died and ALMC just abandoned this facility. If I can find more information I hope to be able to update and improve it in this post. Some more details may be read on the publicly viewable listing of ALMC on UER’s location database.
