the NOVA concept DSLR is strange

Design student Erin Fong (I’ll assume no relation to Gary Fong) came up with a rather unusual concept DSLR design. I think it’s great when someone thinks outside the box but there are some things about this design that make me wonder if she’s ever actually used a DSLR!

One thing I wonder is how that viewfinder is supposed to work. Since the concept is called a DSLR one can assume the optical path for the viewfinder would need to be crammed in there somewhere… but where? To use it like that, there would have to be an EVF crammed in there because there certainly isn’t room for a prism or mirror considering where her eye is. Looks to be a tight fit no matter how you approach it but all things considered I’d say this is a relatively minor design issue for now.

Other than that the big issue that immediately jumped out is stability. I can’t see any way those handles are going to provide a better alternative to a standard DSLR for holding the camera and ensuring stability. With the arms pulled apart, hoping to hold it while keeping your elbows close to your body for stability is going to be an exercise in frustration.

I doubt this odd blend of 8mm movie camera and “DSLR” will ever see the light of day, although I’m sure some people will appreciate it. If something like this did come to market I suspect it would be more likely to sport a micro-4/3s sensor and would have an EVF.
