This weekend might be the last time I get to walk the whole length of the abandoned Rochester subway before it gets filled in. I’m definitely disappointed that they’ll be doing that but if the subway really is a structural danger to the streets above then it’s probably something that must be done. Tomorrow I’ll have to finalize the car pooling plans, figure out where we’ll be meeting and I’ll be trying to find that one last flashlight that’s playing hide or seek.
The issue of what to do with the subway has been an ongoing topic in Rochester for quite some time. On the plus side they won’t be filling in the more popular and scenic eastern end of the subway tunnel although there are projects planned for that area too. There have been all kinds of ideas for the subway’s remains, some good and some bad; ultimately safety concerns will come before any historic or cultural interests.
I’m hoping that I’ll have some photos & a story to go with them before the weekend is over. I’ve got some catching up to do from the past couple weeks as well. Various things, like getting sick, have gotten in the way of keeping up to date with the site this month.

Can’t wait to see photos from your trip! Incidentally, RochesterSubway.com is planning an excursion into the tunnel on March 20. Open invitation to anyone interested. Visit RocSubway on Facebook and click on ‘Events’ to RSVP.
