Here we have something that doesn’t exist, never did and never will. The Pentax 645D, rumored, hinted at, suggested and a tall tale for years upon years now. My friend Joe and I had both given up all hope that Pentax would bring digital to their medium format system and their fantastic yet under-appreciated lenses and cameras.
All the most recent rumors which sounded ridiculous seem to have come true, too! Did you dismiss the idea that a medium format camera would come out with dual SD card slots? Well, better get used to the fact that the 645D actually does have dual SD slots, CF cards need not apply here.
With a 44x33mm sensor sporting 40 megapixels and compatibility with their preexisting medium format lenses the camera is everything we thought Pentax would never manage to do. The 645D also carries a list of features that sound like they belong in any major 35mm based DSLR. Built in HDR compositing, 11 point AF, advanced multi-segment metering and shockingly all this will come at you for under $10,000. Forget the new Leaf Aptus, this is a big move in the creeping MeFo price war, and I like it!
