The trip this past weekend was over in a flash, but it was a fun time.  I’ll go over our visit to the PDN PhotoPlus expo in this post and the rest of the trip in another.

Storm chasing June 21, 2008

Last night I tried to chase down some lightning but didn’t have much luck at all. When the storm first rolled in most of the lightning seemed to be between clouds and even that wasn’t terribly frequent.  I would have tried to shoot that but it was so light out that it really didn’t look like much when the clouds flashed.  I still went out and found a relatively scenic area to try and compose some shots. Unfortunately, the lighting was so infrequent (striking every one to three minutes) and spread out all around me that I never was able to pick a direction to aim the camera and compose and actually get another bolt to strike within frame.  I decided to wait and see if it would get better somewhere else so that I could move to a new location if needed.

After sitting in my car listening to heavy rain pound my sunroof for 15 minutes and seeing only a handful of strikes in in various directions all around me, I gave up and went home.

Hopefully I’ll get a more cooperative storm soon and be able to follow this posting with some photos!  Unfortunately, most thunderstorms in Rochester seem to be that way.  Only rarely do we get one where you can set up somewhere and expect to see enough lighting to get multiple decent compositions with lightning in the frame.  I don’t just want pictures of lighting, because I could have had that, I want good ones!

There are storms forcasted through Monday so I’m just going to have to keep an eye on them.

Pow Photog: the snazzy new gloves that apparently explode awesome all over the place December 14, 2007

As I mentioned in this post, I was ordering some new gloves. They just arrived today because DHL decided the snow yesterday was too scary and didn’t bother to ever actually try to deliver them.

Here’s how they look when the fingertips aren’t folded back:

Pho-tog gloves 1 Pho-tog gloves 2

First impressions are positive. They fit well, are tight but not too tight and they do a pretty good job of insulating my hand and blocking the wind. The folding fingertip design seems to work well too. Although the website said they used velcro, they are instead using a magnetic clasp type thing. I think velcro would be nicer in terms of not having to worry about clinking things with little bits of metal; but they secure with a satisfying clink and won’t get gunked up with fuzz like velcro. Below are some pictures with the tips folded away:

Hopefully I’ll get to put them to the test soon, but I think they’re going to work quite well. Anything is better than freezing hands on a cold windy day. Only time will tell if they were worth their price.

Gloves for a photographer December 5, 2007

On newschoolofphotography.com’s forum someone stumbled across these gloves and nobody could find them on sale anywhere. I finally ran in to a site that carried them and ordered a pair (hopefully they fit, otherwise I’ll have to exchange them). They’re made by Pow, and the fingertips on the thumb, pointer and middle fingers fold back. Essentially they’re aimed at photographers, they call them the “Pho-tog” after all. Aside from looking silly, the website evogear.com where I bought them has one of the most absurd descriptions I’ve ever read:

With a graphic-pushing palm that explodes awesome all over the place”

I’ll update with a picture and my impression of them when they arrive in hopefully a week or so (free shipping! yay).

Wow, what happened! November 14, 2007

These past few weeks have been hectic between finishing up this term, getting ready for the next and getting travel arrangements in order.  I hope to do some shooting later this week, and especially in the next two weeks since I’ll have some time off.  There will be some new stuff, I promise!

Updates and delays September 24, 2007

I can’t believe it’s been three weeks since I’ve posted anything.  Having school start back up has really distracted me.  I have only gone shooting twice between the last post and now.  The first time, around the 13th of the month, nothing worthwhile came of the attempt.  Yesterday though I got a few things worth keeping from Irondequoit Bay.  The sky was a little plain but we made do… I’ll write more and post them tomorrow, for now I must sleep so I can work on lab reports.

Perseid Meteor shower August 14, 2007

It seems to be a recurring problem for me this summer.  Every time there’s something I want to photograph the weather chooses to interrupt my plans.  The 4th of July was a hazy mess, and the Perseid Meteor shower over the weekend was obscured by clouds.  It looks like I’ll just head back up to the lake soon or down town or somewhere else and get some shooting in, maybe this weekend.

bad weather August 5, 2007

Having been in Cincinnati since Friday, it sure is disappointing to have it be so hot and humid.  It’s enough that I don’t want to go out and shoot, and there’s not a whole lot to shoot inside that I really want to do either.  Even if I went out to shoot, it’s been so hazy (even at night) that I won’t get the kind of results I’d like.  Unless the weather changes significantly I may write off shooting for this trip entirely.  All I’ve taken are a few snapshots with my point & shoot.

I knew this was a possibility, August in Ohio is muggy.  I just hoped it would be better.  At least the time with the family is well spent.

ND Gradually getting here July 17, 2007

In my attempt to get a new ND grad filter (Cokin 4×6″ 3 stop soft edge) I got sent the wrong thing by B&H.  They’re doing right and fixing it, it’s just going to wind up taking about a week longer to get the right thing.  I’ve got to say, their customer service is much better than the last time I used it six or seven years ago, kudos!

Welcome all July 2, 2007

I’ve been wanting to get something going for a while now and this is it. I have no idea how often I’ll be updating this or what I’ll update it with each time. I hope to be able to use this to share things (photographs) with friends and family. One major topic will definitely be photographing with bad color vision, I don’t expect to be able to help other people who are color blind and enjoy photography, but I will share things I’ve learned and techniques I use to work around or with this.

I’m sure there will be more to come later!
