One more time in to the dark

This weekend might be the last time I get to walk the whole length of the abandoned Rochester subway before it gets filled in.  I’m definitely disappointed that they’ll be doing that but if the subway really is a structural danger to the streets above then it’s probably something that must be done.  Tomorrow I’ll have to finalize the car pooling plans, figure out where we’ll be meeting and I’ll be trying to find that one last flashlight that’s playing hide or seek. [...]

Update on bookmaking with Black River Imaging

I had previously mentioned that I would be providing more information on a recent experience with Black River Imaging.  Unfortunately those books were holiday gifts to family and I wound up not having the time to do the sort of review I wanted before giving them to family members.  Once again this is more of a placeholder promising a future detailed review of the process and results.
I will say that they were very fast with my most recent order. [...]

Coming soon: camera bags, factories and more bookmaking

Having just gotten back from vacation I’m still catching up with everything and fending an overly affectionate cat off of me every time I try to type anything.
I’ve got a few things to work on including photos from a factory I visited in Pennsylvania and some discussion of my recent bookmaking experience (which isn’t over yet). [...]

Off to NYC, Long Island and of course PhotoPlus!

After all the packing, charging and formatting I am hopefully all ready for the weekend. I’ll be back Monday evening and will get show impressions, photos and other good stuff up throughout the rest of next [...]

Now selling a print on Etsy!

After many repeat suggestions of “sell prints you fool” I’ve finally decided to try something. For the time being I’m giving Etsy a shot. I know quite a few people who use and love it so why shouldn’t I? Click on the “Buy Prints” link in the top navigation bar and you can be the lucky owner of this experimental first online print-for-sale.
On another note, I can’t wait for color management in Flash to match what Firefox is doing to CSS [...]

Weekend adventures – forgotten places in Rochester

This weekend promises to be an interesting weekend in many ways. A number of people from around the area (and some Canadians) will be gathering together in Rochester to see various sites & places around Rochester. As always when I go out wandering, exploring or sight seeing, I’ll have some camera gear on me and I hope to come back with some neat shots to [...]

The exciting conclusion to “Inheriting a bag of mystery camera gear”

100mm 2.8 macro on the left, 75-300 IS on the right

Nearly a month ago now (yikes!) I mentioned that I would be receiving some inherited camera gear. It arrived a few weeks ago but I only just got around to shooting it now, partly because I wanted to try a particular photographic technique for shooting the gear. A couple years ago Joe was trying a blackwater technique that produces some really nice reflections and is pretty spiffy for doing product shots. I wanted to do the same but I didn’t have any of the equipment to do it. [...]

Photobooks revisited

I’ve been slowly working on putting together a book and I have been dragging my feet on it in part due to the fact that I’m not sure where to get it printed. I am happy with what Smilebooks offered for the price. I still have their software installed however I’m looking to find something with a higher overall build quality, in particular with a stitched binding rather than just glue. [...]

New image display method

I’ve replaced Lightbox. For a long time I’ve been trying to find something with the ease of use of Lightbox that incorporated automatic image resizing (like Shadowbox). I also needed it to display longer descriptions correctly, something Shadowbox has trouble with but Lightbox is good at. Shadowbox still has some neat features that I wish I could take advantage of like allowing you to drag a huge image around inside of the pop up frame. [...]
